Public numbers are shared by design

Messages to a free public number may be visible to many people. Never use one for passwords, authentication codes, financial accounts, medical information, private conversations, or anything tied to your identity. A listed number is not reserved for you, and another visitor may see a message first. Use a personal number or controlled service when privacy or continuity matters.

Choose a directory directly

Open the direct FreePhoneNum directory for the United States or Canada. Ghostmail offers no signup cards, number inventory, or claim that it controls listed numbers; the choice is simply which public directory to visit. FreePhoneNum's terms prohibit copying its directory and numbers, so browse normally instead of scraping, republishing entries, or building a separate list.

Use the number with Ghostmail

After choosing the US or Canada directory, select a displayed number and paste the complete +1 number into Ghostmail. Copy it from there and open the public provider page to read any message. Ghostmail does not receive, store, or forward SMS. Use this only for a permitted, non-sensitive test and do not expect a private inbox, reservation, or automatic deletion.

Valid format does not prove allocation

A number with the expected +1 format only looks plausible; it does not prove current allocation, reachability, acceptance by a sender, or activity in the directory. Delivery is not guaranteed. Even a number that worked moments ago can become unsuitable for a later transaction, because public directory status and sender acceptance can change without notice to visitors at any time. A sender may filter public or VoIP-style numbers, delay a message, require a paid account, or refuse a code. Ghostmail and FreePhoneNum cannot bypass those rules.

Know the workflow's boundaries

This workflow does not offer inventory scraping, private rentals, API access, paid signup, sending SMS, or number reservation. It also cannot promise a public message will remain available later. Before continuing, ask whether it would matter if another visitor read the message or it never arrived. If it would, stop and use a private number you control.

The short version

Treat free public SMS numbers as visible, shared, external test endpoints. Open the official US or Canada directory directly, use a non-sensitive permitted test only, and never rely on one for privacy, exclusivity, or delivery.
